UCEED 2027: Everything to Know Before Applications Open on October 1
Registration hasn’t opened yet – which is exactly the advantage. Here’s the full picture of dates, eligibility, exam pattern, and how to use September to prepare before everyone else even applies.
Quick Facts
On this page
1. What UCEED is, and who should take it
The Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) is the entrance test for the Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme at six IITs – Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Roorkee, and Indore – plus IIITDM Jabalpur. It’s the primary gateway into a design career through the IIT system, distinct from NID’s own entrance process.
UCEED suits students who are creative but also analytical – it tests visual reasoning and observation alongside design aptitude, not just drawing skill. A student strong in Class 12 PCM or PCB, but drawn to product design, UX, animation, or industrial design rather than a conventional engineering or medical path, is exactly who this exam is built for.
2. Key dates for 2027
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Notification release | October 1, 2026 |
| Application window opens | October 1, 2026 |
| Last date (without late fee) | October 31, 2026 |
| Last date (with late fee) | November 2026 (exact date to follow in official bulletin) |
| Exam date | January 17, 2027 |
3. Eligibility criteria
- Qualification: Must have passed Class 12 (or an equivalent qualifying exam) in the year of application or the year before.
- Age limit: Expressed as a date-of-birth cutoff, not a flat age. For UCEED 2026 it was: OPEN/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates born on or after October 1, 2001; SC/ST/PwD candidates born on or after October 1, 1996 (a 5-year relaxation). For 2027, the corresponding cutoffs would shift a year later (Oct 1, 2002 / Oct 1, 1997) – but IIT Bombay has not yet published the official 2027 brochure, so treat this as expected, not confirmed, until it is.
- Attempts: A candidate can appear for UCEED in two consecutive years.
- Subject requirements: IIITDM Jabalpur, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee require Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in Class 12. The other participating IITs accept students from any stream.
4. Exam pattern & what each part tests
| Part | Mode | Duration | Marks | Tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part A | Online (computer-based) | 2 hours | 200 | Numerical Ability, Visualisation & Spatial Ability, Observation & Design Sensitivity, Environmental & Social Awareness |
| Part B | Offline (pen & paper) | 1 hour | 100 | Drawing and design aptitude – sketching, proportion, and visual communication |
Total: 3 hours, 300 marks. The split matters for prep – Part A rewards structured practice on visual and logical reasoning, while Part B rewards regular sketching practice, not last-minute cramming.
5. How to register, step by step
- From October 1, visit the official UCEED website (hosted by IIT Bombay for the 2027 cycle) and register with a valid email and phone number.
- Fill in academic and personal details, and select the exam city preferences.
- Upload photograph and signature per the specified format.
- Pay the application fee. As per the previous (2026) cycle, this was ₹2,000 for female candidates (all categories) and SC/ST/PwD candidates, and ₹4,000 for all other candidates – the 2027 fee hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, so verify the exact amount once the brochure is out.
- Submit before October 31 to avoid the late fee.
- Download the confirmation page and keep it along with the application number safe.
6. What to do in September – before applications even open
This is the actual edge this article is about: the application window isn’t open, so most aspirants haven’t started. Here’s how to use the head start.
- Now – end of September Build a daily sketching habit (20–30 minutes): everyday objects, perspective, proportion. This is a skill that needs repetition over months, not weeks.
- Now – end of September Start Part A prep in parallel – numerical ability and spatial visualisation puzzles. These overlap with general aptitude practice most Class 12 students are already doing for other exams.
- October Register the moment the form opens (Oct 1) rather than waiting – this avoids the last-week server rush and confirms exam city preference early.
- November – December Move to full mock papers combining Part A and Part B under timed conditions. Review design-sensitivity questions with a portfolio or mentor’s eye, not just a marking key.
- Early January Taper mocks, revise sketching fundamentals, confirm admit card and exam city.
- January 17 Exam day – Part A (online) followed by Part B (offline) at the designated centre.
7. Mistakes that cost design aspirants a good rank
- Treating Part B as “just drawing.” It’s assessed on proportion, concept clarity, and communication – not artistic polish alone.
- Starting sketch practice only after the form opens. Visual observation skills build slowly; a four-month head start (Sept–Dec) shows.
- Skipping the environmental & social awareness component. It’s an easy scoring section that’s frequently under-prepared.
- Assuming every IIT accepts every stream. Confirm subject eligibility for the specific institute before committing prep time.
8. Frequently asked questions
When do UCEED 2027 applications open?
October 1, 2026, with October 31, 2026 as the last date without a late fee.
Can a Commerce or Humanities student apply for UCEED?
Yes, for most participating institutes. IIITDM Jabalpur, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee specifically require Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in Class 12 – the other IITs accept any stream.
Is UCEED the same as the NID entrance exam?
No. UCEED is specific to admission into the six participating IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. NID conducts its own separate entrance exam (DAT).
How many times can a student attempt UCEED?
A candidate is permitted two consecutive attempts.
What does Part B of the exam actually involve?
A one-hour, offline, pen-and-paper section worth 100 marks, testing drawing and design aptitude – sketching, proportion, and the ability to communicate an idea visually.
Is design a serious career option, or just “the creative one”?
Elysian’s counsellors help students evaluate design careers against their actual strengths – spatial reasoning, sketching, problem-solving – before September turns into a rushed October decision.
