For Class 12 students, the next four months are the toughest of school life: board preparation, practicals and JEE, all at once. This guide covers JEE Main 2027 dates, registration, eligibility and exam pattern, and gives parents a clear plan for the months ahead.

JEE Main 2027 Registration: Step by Step

  1. Register on jeemain.nta.nic.in. Use the student’s own mobile number and an email they check often. All updates come here.
  2. Fill personal and academic details. Name, date of birth and parents’ names must match the Class 10 certificate exactly.
  3. Choose the paper. Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech. Paper 2A for B.Arch and 2B for B.Planning, if your child is interested in those.
  4. Pick exam cities. Choose cities you can reach easily. Chennai students usually have several centre options.
  5. Upload documents. A recent photograph, signature, and category or PwD certificate if applicable.
  6. Pay the fee online and save the confirmation. The fee for general category male candidates was about ₹1,000 for one paper in 2026; check the 2027 bulletin for the final fee.

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility

CriteriaRequirement
Age limitNo age limit to appear
Year of passing Class 122025, 2026, or appearing in 2027
Number of attemptsThree consecutive years; up to two sessions per year
Subjects for B.TechPhysics and Maths, plus Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject
Marks to appearNo minimum
Marks for NIT / IIIT / GFTI admission75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST), or top 20 percentile of your board
The 75% rule matters. A good JEE score is not enough on its own for NITs and IIITs. Your child also needs 75% in Class 12 boards (or to be in the top 20 percentile of their board). This is exactly why board exams can’t be neglected for JEE.

JEE Main 2027 Exam Pattern (Paper 1: B.E./B.Tech)

FeatureDetails
ModeComputer-based test
Duration3 hours
SubjectsPhysics, Chemistry, Mathematics
Questions75 in total: 20 MCQs + 5 numerical questions per subject, all compulsory
Total marks300
Marking+4 for correct, –1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted
Languages13, including English, Hindi and Tamil

This is the 2026 pattern, which NTA is expected to continue. Since every question is compulsory and wrong answers cost marks, accuracy matters as much as speed.

What Does a JEE Main Score Get You?

  • NITs, IIITs and GFTIs admit through JEE Main rank via JoSAA counselling, subject to the 75% board rule.
  • IITs: the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main candidates qualify to write JEE Advanced 2027 in May 2027. JEE Advanced can be attempted only twice, in two consecutive years.
  • Many private and state universities also accept JEE Main scores, alongside their own entrance tests.
For Tamil Nadu families: admission to Anna University and TNEA colleges is based on Class 12 marks, not JEE. JEE Main matters if your child is aiming for NIT Trichy, other NITs, IIITs or the IITs. That makes strong board marks doubly important for students in Tamil Nadu.

Balancing JEE Main and Class 12 Boards: A 4-Month Plan

October 2026: Finish the syllabus, register earlyComplete any remaining Class 12 chapters. Register for Session 1 now; the window opened on 24 October. Start one full mock test a week.
November 2026: Fix weak topicsSubmit the form before 22 November. Use mock results to list the 8–10 weakest chapters and revise them one by one. Keep school assignments and practicals on track.
December 2026: Mock tests and pre-boardsTwo full JEE mocks a week, analysed carefully. Pre-board exams usually fall here; treat them as board practice, not a distraction.
January 2027: Session 1Light revision, formula sheets and sleep in the final week. After the exam, shift fully to board preparation.
February to April 2027: Boards, then Session 2Focus on board exams first; the 75% rule depends on them. Return to JEE practice for Session 2 in April if your child wants to improve their score.

A Note for Parents

Not every Science student needs to write JEE, and not every JEE candidate needs to aim for an IIT. Engineering is one good path among many: design, architecture, pure sciences, data science and management are all strong options for students with a Maths background.

If your child is writing JEE only because “everyone in class is,” or seems drained rather than driven, it’s worth having an honest conversation now, before January. A clear direction often lifts both motivation and marks.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Waiting until the last week to register, then facing site slowdowns or payment errors.
  • A mismatch between the name or date of birth in the form and the Class 10 certificate.
  • Ignoring board preparation and missing the 75% rule for NITs.
  • Taking mocks without analysing mistakes, so the same errors repeat.
  • Guessing randomly on difficult questions, which costs marks through negative marking.
