What’s New in NID DAT 2027

New 5.5-year Integrated M.Des

A new 11-semester programme you join right after Class 12 that ends with a Master of Design. It runs at NID Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar across 15 disciplines in five streams, with 9 seats per discipline.

Prelims is now a qualifier only

Your Prelims score is used only to shortlist you for the Mains. It carries 0% weight in the final merit. Your Mains performance decides your rank.

Wider Mains shortlist

For B.Des, NID now calls about 2.5 times the available seats to the Mains, up from 1.5 times. More students get a shot at the Mains, but the Mains itself becomes more crowded.

Choose one track only

If you apply for B.Des or the Integrated programme, you cannot also apply for the 2.5-year M.Des. Both exams are on the same day.

The exact Mains weightage split for 2027 has not been published yet; NID says it will be announced later. In the 2026 cycle, B.Des Mains used 60% for the Studio Sensitivity Test and 40% for the In-Person Sensitivity Test.

How to Apply for NID DAT 2027: Step by Step

  1. Sign up at admissions.nid.edu. Enter the student’s name and date of birth exactly as they appear on the Class 10 certificate. Use an email and mobile number you will keep active until August 2027.
  2. Fill personal and academic details. If Class 12 results are not out yet, mark the status as “Appearing.” This year the form also asks for short write-ups on why the student is interested in NID, so give them a little thought.
  3. Choose your programme carefully. B.Des, the 5.5-year Integrated programme, or M.Des. The programme you apply for cannot be changed later.
  4. Rank your campus preferences. Put the campus you genuinely want first, but add realistic backups. Allotment weighs your merit against these preferences.
  5. Pick your test city. Chennai is one of 17 Prelims cities. You can only change this during the 1 to 3 December edit window.
  6. Upload documents. A recent colour photo on a white background, a signature in black ink on white paper, and category or disability certificates if applicable.
  7. Pay online and save everything. Download the confirmation page and payment receipt, and keep a printed copy for the admit card and Mains stages.

NID DAT 2027 Exam Pattern: Prelims vs Mains

StageWhat it testsRole in selection
DAT Prelims (pen and paper, 3 hours, 100 marks)Drawing, visual and spatial thinking, design awareness, creative problem-solvingQualifier only. 0% weight in the final rank
DAT Mains: B.Des / IntegratedStudio Sensitivity Test (hands-on making, observation) and In-Person Sensitivity TestDecides 100% of the final merit
DAT Mains: M.DesDiscipline-specific studio test and interviewDecides 100% of the final merit

The big takeaway: clearing the Prelims gets you in the door, but the Mains is where the seat is won. Students who only practise exam-style questions often struggle in the studio and interview rounds, where NID is looking for observation, curiosity and the ability to explain their thinking.

NID Campuses for 2027

  • Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar: 5.5-year Integrated M.Des (new) and 2.5-year M.Des
  • Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh: B.Des / 5.5-year Integrated M.Des
  • All programmes are applied for through the same NID DAT 2027 application.

A Realistic NID 2027 Preparation Timeline

October 2026: Build the drawing habit30 to 45 minutes of daily observational sketching: people, objects, perspective, light and shadow. Start a small notebook of everyday design questions (“Why is this handle shaped this way?”).
November 2026: Apply, then practise past papersFinish the NID application form early in the month. Then attempt timed past Prelims papers every week and review where time runs out.
December 2026: Mock tests and exam rhythmTwo or three full 3-hour mocks in the first two weeks. Download the admit card on 10 December and plan the travel to your test centre.
January to March 2027: Prepare for the Mains earlyDon’t wait for results. Practise 3D model-making with paper, clay and found materials, and get comfortable talking about your ideas aloud. That is what the studio and in-person rounds reward.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • A name or date of birth that doesn’t match the Class 10 certificate. These fields cannot be edited later.
  • Applying for the wrong track. B.Des/Integrated and M.Des are mutually exclusive this year.
  • Listing only one campus preference. It increases the risk of missing a seat if competition is high.
  • Preparing only for the Prelims. It no longer counts towards the rank.
  • Leaving payment to the last day.

Before You Apply: Is Design the Right Fit?

Many students apply to NID because they “like drawing.” That’s a good start, but design is a career about solving problems for people, through products, interfaces, spaces, textiles or communication. The students who thrive usually enjoy observing, questioning and building, not just making something look nice.

If your child is torn between design, architecture (NATA) and other creative or technical paths, it helps to look at their aptitude, interests and working style together before committing two years of preparation to one exam.
