Does engineering still have value in 2026?

A 5-year reality check – what the placement, salary and skills data actually says, and what to check before assuming a degree alone is “safe.”

Meet Aravind (a composite, illustrative profile) – Class of 2021, mechanical engineering, a decent Tier-2 college in Chennai. Maths coaching from Class 9. A JEE crash course. A management-quota seat when the rank fell short. Four years and one final-year project later, the degree was done. The job never came.

He is not an outlier. He is the median – and the data explains exactly why.

The numbers nobody puts on the brochure

India makes the most engineers on Earth – and the toughest odds to match

India produces more engineering graduates than any other country – close to 1.5 million a year. Yet independent industry surveys converge on an uncomfortable figure: roughly 83% of the Class of 2024 engineering graduates received zero job or internship offer, according to the Unstop Talent Report 2025, which surveyed over 30,000 Gen Z professionals and 700 HR leaders. Even the “safe” top tier isn’t immune – IIT placement rates slipped from around 90% to 80% between 2021–22 and 2023–24, with close to 8,000 IITians across all 23 campuses missing campus placements in 2024, up from roughly 3,400 just two years earlier.

Two numbers that look contradictory, but aren’t: the India Skills Report puts “on-paper” engineering employability at 71–72% – a standardised assessment of job-ready skills. The Unstop figure of 83% with no actual offer measures something different: real hiring outcomes. Both are true at once. That gap – between testing employable and actually getting hired – is the entire story of this blog.

The cost side of the equation

The degree got more expensive while the starting salary didn’t move

A 2026 analysis found the average cost of an engineering education in India – fees, coaching, hostel – now runs to roughly ₹34 lakh, while the average starting salary for a fresh engineering graduate sits at about ₹4.74 lakh per year. Multiple industry sources place entry-level salaries for non-elite colleges in the ₹3–5 lakh range specifically, largely flat in real terms for years even as the cost of getting the degree has climbed steadily.

Families are spending more for a credential that, on its own, buys less certainty than it used to.
Why this is happening – not just what

Three structural forces, compounding at once

  • Skill-degree mismatch. Curricula at most non-elite colleges remain theory-heavy, with little exposure to cloud computing, applied AI, or real-world project work – the exact areas companies now hire for.
  • Volume without filtering. With over 1.5 million graduates a year and no meaningful entrance-quality filter beyond JEE for the top colleges, the market is flooded at the mid- and lower tier, where most seats actually exist.
  • The unpaid-internship trap. The share of undergraduates accepting unpaid internships rose from roughly 1 in 8 in 2023 to 1 in 4 in 2024, per the Unstop Talent Report 2025 – a sign of downward wage pressure even before formal employment begins.

There’s a counter-narrative worth naming honestly: 73% of recruiters now say they’re dismissing premier-college pedigree in favour of demonstrated, talent-based hiring – meaning the old “get into a good college, relax” playbook no longer protects anyone, but it also means the path past a flooded market is genuinely open to students who build real, visible skills. Engineering is not “dead”; the version of engineering that ends at a transcript is.

The paradox underneath the numbers

Too many generalist graduates, not enough specialised ones

Here’s what makes this more than a simple “too many engineers” story: even as the market is flooded at the generalist entry level, NASSCOM projects India’s digital-talent demand-supply gap will widen from roughly 25% today to nearly 29% by 2028, and estimates the country will need over one million engineers with advanced AI and emerging-tech skills in the next two to three years. Oversupply and a genuine talent shortage are happening in the same market, simultaneously – because they’re not measuring the same thing. There are too many graduates with generic, syllabus-only preparation, and not nearly enough with the specific, demonstrable skills employers are actively short of.

NEP 2020’s quiet escape hatch

A lever families can actually ask about

This is where India’s National Education Policy 2020 becomes directly relevant, and most engineering-focused advice never mentions it. NEP 2020 mandates that engineering colleges move toward multidisciplinary structures with minors, multiple entry-and-exit points, and compulsory internships built into the credit structure – not an optional add-on.

Concretely, this means: a mechanical engineering student can now formally minor in data science or business studies; exit after one year with a certificate or after two years with a diploma; and AICTE’s model curriculum requires a mandatory internship of roughly 600–700 hours across the four-year programme. Colleges implementing this seriously are, in effect, building in the exact “skills + portfolio” layer that separates students who get hired from students who don’t – this is a lever families can specifically ask a college about, not just an abstract policy reform.

A framework for the decision

The 5-question filter

Before choosing engineering – or before assuming a current engineering degree is “safe” – run this filter. It works both for a Class 12 student picking a branch and for a second- or third-year student deciding whether to double down or pivot.

Branch-industry alignment

Does the specific branch – not “engineering” as a category – map to a growing hiring segment (AI/ML, data engineering, robotics, VLSI) or a shrinking/flat one? Ask the college for branch-wise placement data from the last three years, not an aggregate number.

Placement transparency test

Will the college disclose the median (not just the highest) placement package and the percentage of students placed, broken down by branch? Refusal to share this is itself a data point.

Portfolio-readiness plan

Is there a concrete plan – before final year – for at least one internship, one open-source or personal project, and one demonstrable skill (cloud certification, coding portfolio) outside the syllabus?

AI-automation exposure

How automatable is the entry-level role this degree targets, over the next five years? Roles built purely around repetitive documentation or manual testing carry higher risk than roles requiring judgment, design, or systems thinking.

Fallback pathway

If campus placement doesn’t materialise – close to a coin-flip outcome per the data above – is there a defined Plan B: a specific certification, a lateral skill (product, data analytics), or a postgraduate route decided in advance, rather than improvised in panic during final year?

The takeaway

Engineering has not lost its value – it has lost its guarantee.

The degree alone no longer buys a job; it buys eligibility to compete, and the students who win that competition are the ones who treated the four years as a skill-building runway, not a waiting room. For parents, the actionable shift is this: track branch-specific placement data and push for portfolio milestones every semester, not just at the end.
