NEET 2027 Is Likely Going Computer-Based: What Class 11 and 12 Parents Should Do Now
After the NEET 2026 paper leak and re-exam, the next NEET is expected to look different. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how to prepare calmly either way.
Registration expected: Feb–Mar 2027NEET 2027 is the exam your Class 12 child will most likely write in May 2027, and it is expected to be the first NEET held as a computer-based test (CBT) instead of the familiar pen-and-OMR paper. That one change has created a lot of anxiety in parent WhatsApp groups. The good news: the syllabus your child is studying today is not expected to change, and the next seven months matter far more than the exam format.
This NEET 2027 guide separates what has been officially said from what is still speculation, so you can plan with facts rather than forwards.
NEET 2027: What We Know and What Is Still Unconfirmed
As of late October 2026, NTA has not released the NEET 2027 information bulletin. Here is where things stand.
| Question | Status as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Will NEET 2027 be computer-based? | Announced as the plan by the Union Education Ministry in May 2026; the Centre later told the Supreme Court that no final decision had been taken. Not yet in any official bulletin. |
| Will the syllabus change? | No change has been announced. Expect the NMC-approved NEET syllabus based on Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology. |
| How many shifts or days? | Not confirmed. Media reports suggest multiple shifts over several days with normalisation of scores. |
| Exam date | Not announced. Expected in May 2027 based on past years. |
| Exam centres | Reports say NTA has sought AICTE’s help to identify government institutions with computer labs. Not officially confirmed. |
Why NEET 2027 Is Expected to Move Online
The shift comes straight out of what happened this year. A quick timeline:
The leak also had political consequences, including a change of Union Education Minister in July 2026. For families, the practical takeaway is simpler: the government is under pressure to make NEET 2027 secure, and a CBT is the route it has publicly backed.
NEET 2027 Expected Dates

What a Computer-Based NEET 2027 Would Change for Your Child
The questions are expected to stay the same kind of questions. What changes is how your child sits the paper.
What may get easier
- No bubbling errors on an OMR sheet
- Answers can be reviewed and changed on screen
- Far fewer chances of a single leak affecting everyone
What needs new practice
- Reading long Biology statements on a screen for three hours
- Rough work on a separate sheet, not on the question paper
- Understanding normalisation if there are multiple shifts
Students who have written JEE Main, which is already a CBT, will tell you the first mock on a computer feels strange and the fifth feels normal. From January, at least one full mock test a week should be taken on a computer, not just on paper. NTA has offered free practice tests for its CBT exams in the past, and many coaching platforms already run CBT-style NEET mocks.
The Tamil Nadu Picture
For families in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu, NEET 2027 connects to a few local realities:
- Seats: Tamil Nadu has 14,299 MBBS seats in 78 colleges for 2026-27, of which 5,349 are in 37 government colleges, according to the NMC seat matrix.
- Two counselling routes: 15% of government college seats are filled through the All India Quota (MCC counselling); the remaining 85% go through Tamil Nadu’s state counselling.
- Government school quota: students who studied in government schools get 7.5% preferential reservation. In 2026, this covered 537 MBBS and 104 BDS seats.
- Board marks still matter: you need the minimum PCB percentage in Class 12 to be eligible, and from 2025-26 Tamil Nadu has dropped the Class 11 public exam, so the Class 12 board is the one that counts on the certificate.
A Seven-Month NEET 2027 Plan for Class 12
- October–November: Finish the syllabus, honestly. List chapters not yet covered. Biology is 90 of 180 questions; NCERT Biology line by line is non-negotiable.
- December: First full revision plus weekly mocks. Start timed full-length tests. Track accuracy, not just scores, because of negative marking.
- January: Shift some mocks to a computer. Get used to on-screen reading and separate rough work. Collect documents for the form.
- February–March: Register and balance boards. Fill the NEET 2027 form early in the window. Board exams overlap with this period; board syllabus and NEET syllabus largely overlap, so do not treat them as two separate battles.
- April–May: Mocks, error log, sleep. Revise from your own mistake notebook. Protect sleep in the final three weeks.
Class 11 parents: your child will likely write NEET in 2028. The most useful thing now is strong Class 11 concepts in Physics and Chemistry, which is where most students lose marks later.
A Note for Parents
About 20 lakh students wrote NEET in 2026 and India has about 1.4 lakh MBBS seats, roughly one seat for every 14 candidates who appeared. Many hard-working children will not get MBBS in their first attempt, and that says nothing about their worth or ability.
A good plan has a Plan B written down before the exam, not after the result: BDS, B.Sc. Nursing, physiotherapy, allied health sciences, pharmacy, biotechnology, or a considered decision to drop a year. Talking about these options calmly now takes pressure off your child.
Also watch for burnout. A child who has stopped sleeping, eating normally or talking at home needs a conversation more than another test series. Whether NEET 2027 is online or offline, a steady, rested student will do better than an exhausted one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NEET 2027 confirmed to be computer-based?
Not officially. The Union Education Ministry announced the move in May 2026 and NTA has described CBT as a priority, but the Centre told the Supreme Court no final decision had been taken. The NEET 2027 information bulletin will confirm the mode.
Will the NEET 2027 syllabus be different?
No change has been announced. A change in exam mode does not by itself change the syllabus, so keep studying the current NEET syllabus based on Class 11 and 12 NCERT.
When will NEET 2027 registration open?
It is expected in February 2027, as NEET 2026 registration ran from 8 February to 11 March 2026. Dates will be confirmed by NTA.
If there are multiple shifts, will some students get an easier paper?
Multi-shift exams like JEE Main use normalisation to adjust for differences in difficulty between shifts. NTA has not yet published how normalisation would work for NEET 2027.
Can a Class 11 student write NEET 2027 for practice?
No. Candidates must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 with the required subjects, and must be 17 by 31 December of the admission year. Class 11 students should aim for NEET 2028.
