NIFT 2027: The 16 November Deadline, the January Exam and What Your Child Should Do Now

The NIFT entrance exam has moved a month earlier this year. If your child is even thinking about fashion or design, the next three weeks matter more than the next three months.

NIFT 2027 applications opened on 16 October 2026, and the National Testing Agency (NTA) has fixed the entrance exam for 10 January 2027, about a month earlier than the 8 February date of the last cycle. For a Class 12 student who has been “planning to look into NIFT after the board exams”, that plan no longer works. This guide covers the dates, fees, eligibility and exam pattern in plain English, plus an honest look at whether NIFT is the right fit for your child.

NIFT 2027 important dates

These dates are from the official NTA public notice for NIFT 2027, dated 16 October 2026.

What NIFT actually offers

NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) is a government institute with 20 campuses across India, including one in Chennai. Many parents think NIFT means only “fashion design”. In reality the undergraduate options are much wider.

B.Des (Bachelor of Design)

Seven specialisations: Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, Accessory Design, Leather Design and Fashion Interiors.

Tests: GAT + CAT, then Situation Test

B.FTech (Apparel Production)

A technology and production degree: garment manufacturing, quality, production planning and industrial engineering for the apparel industry.

Test: GAT only (needs Maths in Class 12)

Fashion Communication, for example, leads into branding, visual merchandising, styling and content work, which suits many children who love visuals and storytelling but cannot see themselves sewing garments. Accessory Design covers jewellery, products and lifestyle goods. It is worth reading the course descriptions with your child before you fill the form, because the form asks which programme you are applying for.

NIFT 2027 eligibility: who can apply

CriteriaB.DesB.FTech
QualificationClass 12 passed or appearing in 2027, any streamClass 12 with Mathematics, or an engineering diploma (any branch)
Subject requirementNone. Science, Commerce and Arts students are all eligibleMathematics compulsory
Age limitBelow 24 years as on 1 August of the admission yearSame
Relaxation5 years for SC/ST/PwD5 years for SC/ST/PwD
Good news for Commerce and Arts students. B.Des at NIFT has no subject requirement. A Commerce student who has been drawing for years is just as eligible as a Science student. Eligibility rules above are from the NIFT Admission Guidelines 2026; check the 2027 guidelines on nift.ac.in before you submit, in case of small changes.

NIFT 2027 application fee

CategoryOne programmeTwo programmes
General / OBC (NCL) / EWS₹2,000₹3,000
SC / ST / PwD₹500₹750
NRI / Foreign National / OCI / PIO / SAARC₹11,100See NTA information bulletin

“Two programmes” means applying for both B.Des and B.FTech. If your child has Maths and is torn between design and the production side of the industry, paying ₹1,000 more for both is usually sensible.

The NIFT 2027 exam pattern, explained simply

NIFT selection is not a single test. For B.Des it happens in two stages, and the drawing paper carries the most weight. The pattern below is from the 2026 admission guidelines; NTA has confirmed that GAT will again be computer-based and CAT pen-and-paper for NIFT 2027.

TestWhat it checksFormatB.Des weightage
GAT (General Ability Test)English (40 Qs), General Knowledge and Current Affairs (25), Quantitative Ability (20), Analytical and Logical Ability (15)Computer-based, 100 questions, 2 hours, minus 0.25 per wrong answer30%
CAT (Creative Ability Test)Drawing, observation, imagination, colour and design sensePen and paper, 3 hours50%
Situation Test (Stage 2)Hands-on model-making with given materials, for shortlisted candidatesIn person20%

For B.FTech, there is no drawing test. GAT has two sections: Section A (the same 100 questions) carries 30%, and Section B (50 questions on quantitative ability, logical ability and a case study, in 60 minutes) carries 70%.

The honest takeaway

For B.Des, 70% of the final score comes from creative work: the CAT and the Situation Test. A child who is strong in English and GK but has never drawn regularly will find it hard to compete. A child who sketches every day but ignores GAT can still lose out. Both need attention.

How to apply for NIFT 2027, step by step

  1. Go only to the official portal. Apply at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee. Ignore third-party “registration” links.
  2. Keep documents ready. A recent photograph, signature, Aadhaar for e-KYC (NTA has introduced Aadhaar-based e-KYC and a live photograph), category certificate if applicable, and a UDID card for PwD candidates.
  3. Choose the programme carefully. B.Des, B.FTech or both. This decides which tests your child writes.
  4. Pick exam cities. NTA plans to hold the exam in about 100 cities. Families in Tamil Nadu should choose the nearest available cities listed on the form.
  5. Pay and save the confirmation page. Pay online before 16 November, then download and keep the confirmation page and payment proof.

A realistic 10-week NIFT 2027 preparation plan

From now to 10 January is about ten weeks, and it overlaps with Class 12 pre-boards. That is tight, not impossible. The key is steady daily practice rather than weekend cramming.

Late October to mid-November: apply and set a routineFinish the application. Start 45 to 60 minutes of sketching daily: objects at home, people at the bus stop, perspective drawing.
Mid-November to mid-December: build the basePractise one full CAT-style question every two days (theme-based illustrations, colour compositions). Read a newspaper daily for GK. Solve 20 to 30 English and reasoning questions a day.
Mid-December to early January: mock testsTake timed GAT mocks on a computer and timed 3-hour CAT papers. Review mistakes. Download the admit card on 4 January.
After 10 January: Class 12 and Stage 2Return fully to board exam preparation. If shortlisted for B.Des, prepare for the Situation Test (3D model-making) when NIFT announces dates.
For Tamil Nadu families. NIFT admission depends on the entrance score, not Class 12 marks. You still need to pass Class 12, but a strong drawing portfolio and test practice matter far more here than in TNEA-style admissions, where Class 12 marks decide everything.

Is NIFT right for your child? A note for parents

NIFT is a respected brand, but it is not the right answer for every creative child. Before you spend the next ten weeks on it, have one calm conversation at home.

  • Your child sketches, designs or creates things without being told to.
  • They notice colours, fabrics, layouts and how things are made.
  • They are comfortable with critique and redoing work many times.
  • They are curious about the business of fashion, not only the glamour.
  • The interest comes mainly from a reality show or a friend’s choice.
  • Your child dislikes drawing practice and wants a “quick” creative course.
  • The plan is NIFT only, with no backup design exams or degree options.

Design careers are real and growing, but early pay depends heavily on portfolio quality and internships. It is fair to tell your child that, without killing the dream. Also consider applying to other design exams alongside NIFT; the NID DAT 2027 application, for example, runs until 30 November 2026.
